Bicentennial Celebration!

New Portland's Bicentennial Celebration

New Portland was first settled in March of 1783 by David Hutchins. The town of New Portland was given to the residents of Falmouth (now Portland, Maine) by the Massachusetts legislature to repay them for their loss when the British fleet burned Falmouth in 1775.

The first town meeting, held in 1804, was held in the home of Josiah Parker. At that time a petition to the general court of Massachusetts was written for the town to be incorporated as a town. Other families followed and the Town of New Portland was incorporated in 1808.
